Wise’s Critical Lift at Boston University’s Mechanical Engineering Building

See the live progress at Boston University where Wise, MPM Architecture, Thornton Tomasetti, BR+A Consulting Engineers are renovating the Frumkin and Plummer Labs within an occupied mechanical engineering building. The third-floor scope features two new faculty labs and a graduate computer room, supported by rooftop improvements and infrastructure upgrades.

Recently, Wise and our trade partners executed one of five crane picks planned for the project. This pick, being the largest of the five, involved the installation of a 30 foot, 14,000-pound AHU, along with exhaust fans, ductwork, and other key components that will support the building’s current and future expansion of laboratory capabilities.

Located at a busy intersection on Boston University’s campus, the team worked closely with Brookline and BU Police to coordinate a full-day closure of Saint Mary’s Street. With Wise’s self-performing crew helping to guide students and pedestrians safely around the pick, Marr’s 135-ton crane and three flatbed trailers operated efficiently along the closed street to complete the installation.

“Our entire team did an outstanding job coordinating every detail to make the day a success,” said Superintendent Brian Wyer. “It was a great milestone for the project!”
