A Lean Approach to a 24-bed Med-Surg Unit

Extensive collaboration and Lean practices kept this occupied renovation ahead of schedule while minimizing disruption to ongoing hospital operations. This 20,000 SF renovation to Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s East Wing’s 5th floor transformed the space into a high-tech med-surg unit. The 24 new patient rooms feature Bluetooth technology, Smart Glass partitions for patient privacy, and state-of-the-art headwalls. In the heart of the unit is a new nurse call station; surrounded by patient beds, exam rooms, two isolated rooms, and two negative pressure rooms for highly contagious patients. Today, the 5 East Wing offers patients an elevated experience in a transformed and comforting environment.

Chris Schena
Chris Schena, Senior Project Manager

Meet Chris: his journey at Wise began in high school when he explored the construction industry during a job shadowing program. Once in college, he hit the ground running and completed four years as a co-op student while pursuing his B.S. in Construction Engineering Technology at the University of Maine. Upon graduation, he eagerly accepted a full-time position as a Project Engineer and has since advanced to a Senior Project Manager. Now, Chris oversees projects for our Science & Technology and Healthcare sectors for notable clients like Boston Children’s Hospital and NeighborHealth.

Reflecting on his experiences at Wise, Chris shares his biggest lesson: “The team dynamic in construction is so important… we can’t do what we do alone. Building relationships with your team, clients, and project partners is crucial to ensuring everyone moves in the same direction to make the project successful.”
